I was web surfing today and came accross a blog by a Gay Christian. As I read through the posts I found the site to be an interesting read. What bothered me was one of the comments posted to his post.
“How can you be a Christian and be gay?
If a man also lie with mankind, as he lieth with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination: they shall surely be put to death; their blood shall be upon them. Leviticus 20:13″
Since I could not comment directly to this comment on that site I thought I would respond here. Leviticus wrote a lot of things in the bible, and it is perfectly clear that he was homophobic, but what else did he say?
Leviticus 11:10:11 - And all that have not fins and scales in the seas, and in the rivers, of all that move in the waters, and of any living thing which is in the waters, they shall be an abomination unto you: They shall be even an abomination unto you; ye shall not eat of their flesh, but ye shall have their carcasses in abomination.
Translation: No eating Clams, Muscles or Lobster
Leviticus 19:19 - Ye shall keep my statutes. Thou shalt not let thy cattle gender with a diverse kind: thou shalt not sow thy field with mingled seed: neither shall a garment mingled of linen and woolen come upon thee.
Translation: Toss out the Cotton/Wool blends folks… and keep those tomatoes away from the corn!
Leviticus 19:27 - Ye shall not round the corners of your heads, neither shalt thou mar the corners of thy beard.
Translation: Barber shops, hairstylists and Gillette are all out of business!
Leviticus 20:18 - And if a man shall lie with a woman having her sickness, and shall uncover her nakedness; he hath discovered her fountain, and she hath uncovered the fountain of her blood: and both of them shall be cut off from among their people.
Translation: You can’t be fruitful and multiply when your wife is having her monthly visit.
Leviticus 21:5 - They shall not make baldness upon their head, neither shall they shave off the corner of their beard, nor make any cuttings in their flesh.
Translation: No shaved heads… no piercings!
Leviticus 21:14 - A widow, or a divorced woman, or profane, or an harlot, these shall he not take: but he shall take a virgin of his own people to wife.
Translation: You can only marry a virgin, you can’t marry a divorced woman or a widow.
Leviticus 23:3 - Six days shall work be done: but the seventh day is the sabbath of rest, an holy convocation; ye shall do no work therein: it is the sabbath of the LORD in all your dwellings.
Tranlslation: No more 5 day work weeks
Leviticus 24:17 - And he that killeth any man shall surely be put to death.
Tranlation: You must believe in the death penality, and according to Leviticus soldiers soldiers would also be included.
Leviticus 24:20 - Breach for breach, eye for eye, tooth for tooth: as he hath caused a blemish in a man, so shall it be done to him again.
Translation: I guess leviticus didn’t turn the other cheek…
Leviticus 25:23 - The land shall not be sold for ever: for the land is mine, for ye are strangers and sojourners with me.
Translation: You can’t sell land, ever! How much land does the Catholic church own? and have they ever sold any?
So, as you can tell I’m not a big fan of Leviticus, I just can’t give up lobster… or men!
